Each hair goes through three growth phases, which is why laser hair removal is performed as a course of treatments. The effectiveness of the procedure directly depends on the physiology of hair growth and on the phase in which the hair follicle is at the time of treatment.
Anagen — active growth phase This is the only phase in which laser hair removal is effective.
Catagen — transitional phase In this phase, the laser can no longer effectively affect the hair.
Telogen — resting phase The laser does not work in this phase.
Since only a portion of hairs are in the anagen phase at any given time, a course of treatments is required to achieve stable and predictable results, allowing all hairs to be targeted during their active growth phase.
