What skin reactions can occur after laser hair removal?

Let’s talk about the two most common ones:

  • Mild perifollicular reaction The skin is slightly red, and the follicles do not appear visibly swollen.

  • More pronounced perifollicular reaction Redness is more noticeable, and the area around the follicles looks more raised. This is also normal, especially for sensitive skin or in more sensitive areas. In most cases, the skin calms down within a few hours.

Why does skin react differently? Everyone’s skin is different. The intensity of the reaction depends on skin sensitivity, blood circulation, the treated area, hair thickness and pigmentation, and the current condition of the skin.

What if there’s almost no reaction? That’s completely normal too and doesn’t mean the treatment isn’t working. Some people simply tolerate heat better and have a less pronounced vascular response.

What happens in the hair follicle? Laser energy is absorbed by melanin and delivered to the follicle, reducing the hair’s ability to grow. Temporary redness or mild swelling is a natural reaction.

What to do after the treatment? Avoid heat exposure (sauna, hot baths, intense workouts), don’t rub the skin, and if needed, use a light, fragrance-free moisturizer.
